Embroidery Guides & Stitches
Straight Stitch
In this video I'll be showing you how to create a Straight Stitch! They're incredibly simple and the foundation for so many other stitches. I'll be showing you in the form of a straight stitch blossom/star shape - but you can use these for any shapes you like.
Back Stitch & Whipped Back Stitch
In this tutorial I will show you how to create a simple Back Stitch - a fantastic foundational stitch for all kinds of line work an details.
Then I'll show you an easy variation of Back Stitch called Whipped Back Stitch (also sometimes called Whipped Stitch). This is my personal favourite stitch because it creates beautiful raised lines that are perfect for all kinds of floral pieces or line art!
Satin Stitch
In this tutorial I'll be showing you how to create an easy Satin Stitch that is guaranteed to look amazing every time!
In this follow-up tutorial, I'll show you how to use the same Satin Stitch technique to fill irregular shapes such as petals!
French Knot
French Knots get a bad rap for being a difficult stitch. But they're actually quite easy to do if you know the tricks! Below you'll find our video for creating French Knots that are perfect every time. Just remember one thing: keep the tension in your non-dominant hand! And with some practice I know you'll nail it.
Lazy Daisy
In this tutorial I'll show you how to create a Lazy Daisy Stitch! Its such an easy and fun way to create flowers, and it always looks impressive - especially when grouped together.
Woven Wheel Roses
In this tutorial I'll show you how to create two types of Woven Wheel Roses: A classic example and a filled example. A classic rose is is closed in the middle and the entire space is filled with your petals. While a filled rose will have french knots or some other kind of filler stitch in the middle.
Long & Short Stitch
This video from LoveCrafts is great because it shows how you shouldn't overthink the Long & Short stitch. The trick is not to try and make it perfect - and it will look great!
Split Stitch
We love this split stitch tutorial from Penguin & Fish because it's super simple and straight to the point. This stitch is great for line-work, with a smooth but textured effect.
Stem Stitch
Stem Stitch is a super easy method of stitching line work - but it creates some really nice texture to make your piece more interesting. Like the name suggestions, its great for creating flower stems!
Fishbone Stitch
Whilst this video from Handi Works Channel doesn't have verbal instructions, its a really clear visual guide on how to fill your leaf shape using fishbone stitch! Through layering your threads you'll create a beautifully textured and even fill for your pieces.
Leaf Stitch
Leaf Stitch is a filler stitch designed to perfectly fit a leaf shape. It's essentially just two halves of the leaf filled in Satin Stitch, however the angle of the stitch is made in a way so that there edges meet in the middle of the leaf. In this video I'll be showing you how to create a leaf stitch for any floral pieces you're working on.
Coral Stitch
Coral stitch is one of the many interesting stitches that we teach in our 'Floral Sampler' embroidery kit! Whilst we've made a speciality tutorial just for that kit, this video by Practical Embroidery is a quick refresh on exactly how to create those textured knots.
Basketweave Stitch
Another favourite from our 'Floral Sampler' kit, basketweave is a really easy textured stitch! This video from Cutesy Crafts makes it super simply to learn. try mixing up your thread colours to add even more detail!
Fern Stitch
This stitch is a really easy way of creating an angled stitch that looks a bit like a birds 'footprint'. It's essentially just a series of Straight Stitches but placed in a certain order to create the same repeated look. This lovely video from Sarah's Hand Embroidery will show you exactly how to create this look.
Backstitch Filler
Cutesy Craft's video explains how you can fill in shapes like lettering with the simple backstitch. This is a great filler stitch because you're already familiar with how it works! And it creates a neat fill even if it's not perfect.
